Chancellor Amiridis

INTRODUCTION

Chancellor Michael Amiridis—like many UIC students—reflects the diverse, global nature of Chicago. The native of northern Greece was himself a first-generation college student, who came to the U.S. to pursue graduate studies in chemical engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

JOB TRANSITION

What inspired you to become a Chancellor?

My academic career inspired me to become a Chancellor. Prior to UIC, I was the Executive Vice President and Provost at the University of South Carolina. When an opportunity at UIC presented itself, I became very interested not only because of UIC's academic reputation, but also its location in the heart of Chicago. Becoming a Chancellor at UIC gave me the opportunity to apply what I have learned through my professional experience, and more importantly, an opportunity to impact the University in a positive manner.

When you were appointed as the Chancellor of UIC, did it take a while for you to adapt to the position?

Yes, it took a while to adapt. Both the position and the University were new to me. In fact, I am still adapting. In order to make an easier transition, I received assistance from my staff members who provided very valuable insight into the University and its structure.

What did it take for you to get where you are today?

I would say the most important factor was to build my credentials as an academic. In order to become Chancellor, you need to have a professional track record of increasing responsibilities that give you the chacne to demonstrate leadership skills. In addition, it is important to have the right personality and to desire personal interaction with staff members as well as students. As Chancellor, it is important to not only have a vision for the institution, but also a plan on how to achieve that vision. Finally have a set of beliefs that is consistent with the mission statement of the institution makes it possible to lead the organization in the right direction.

What was your previous position?

Prior to UIC, I was the Executive President and Provost at the University of South Carolina.. As the Provost, I oversaw all academic functions of the University and shared responsibilities coordinating all budget and capital planning.

JOB INSIGHT

What are some of your responsibilities as the Chancellor?

I am responsible for everything that revolves around the University. In business terms, I am the CEO. I have to make sure that everything is operating correctly and to make sure that the University progresses each year.

When did you realize that this was the career that you wanted to be in?

As the Provost at my former University, I was able to see what the President did everyday and I grew an increasing interest for the position. Fortunately, UIC approached me and presented me with a unique opportunity to serve as the Chancellor.

Describe a typical day in the office.

A typical day consist of attending internal meetings, making public appearances, seeking funding, attending extracurricular events, and making sure that the University is operating at an efficient level.

JOB OPINION

What are some of the challenges that you face and how do you overcome those challenges?

Time is always a challenge as I have many events and meetings that I have to attend and that there's always something else I can do to help the University. In order to overcome this challenge, I have to prioritize what is important.

What makes your job fun?

It keeps me young. I deal with a lot of young people everyday who are excited about what they do. It’s inspiring to work in an innovative environment where staff members and students think of creative ways to improve the University. Aside from working with students and staff, attending athletic events is also a very fun perk.

How do you intend on improving The University to make it stand out?

We must work hard to improve the overall student experience at UIC. In order to do so, we focus on what we teach and how we can teach better. In addition, improving facilities throughout the campus will provide a a better opportunity for students to get engaged and succeed outside of the classroom.

I am also paying closer attention to the city of Chicago and searching for opportunities and partnerships that will provide mutual benefit for our academic community as well as Chicago. To do so, we must figure out the areas that impact the city the most and find ways for UIC and the City can work together. We can be a world model for an engaged Urban University.

Lastly, become more entrepreneurial. We can raise the funds we need by being more nimble and innovative.

Where do you see UIC in 5 years? How do you plan on getting UIC to that level?

Overall, I would like to set an optimistic tone and hold all members of our community at UIC to world-class standard. I want to make sure that everyone is committed to improving the University, and if not hold them accountable. In addition, I would like to improve our infrastructure (a new dorm, academic buildingsm and ancillary facilities.)

ADVICE

What advice do you have for students at UIC and what do you want them to know about you?

Stay focused on what you want to achieve and what is important in your life. It is very easy to lose your focus. Follow your passion and find a job that allows you do to do what you love.

Who is your inspiration and how did they help you?

I’m a first generation student, and my parents always wanted my brother and I to get an education that they didn’t have. They couldn’t afford an education because it was costly after WWII in Greece. From this point, they have been an inspiration. They weren’t able to provide me with day to day guidance at the University, but offered the inspiration to do well in my professional and personal life.
